Adding a little something extra
For cartographic purposes, we often add layers to the map for purely aesthetic reasons. For example, we might add in a State Outline twice—once as a crisp border, and once as a drop shadow. Let's create a simulated drop shadow for our Counties map:
- Right-click on the State Outline layer and select Copy.
- Right-click on the Map Frame name (US Counties) and select Paste. You now have a second State Outline layer (make sure that this does not create an extra copy of the file in your folder; it merely adds the same file to your map for the second time).
- Drag this layer to the bottom of the Drawing Order and change its name to Drop Shadow.
- Change the outline to gray 30% and 4 pt, and click Apply:
